Cannes thief 'steals €40m of jewels' in armed heist at hotel
An armed man has stolen jewels worth an estimated €40m from a hotel in the French Riviera resort of Cannes, officials say.
Authorities have said the robbery took place in broad daylight at the Carlton Hotel on the promenade in Cannes.
The hotel is located on the "Promenade de la Croisette" which stretches along the Mediterranean Sea and is about 2 km long.
Cannes is famous for its annual film festival, which attracts actors, film directors and celebrities from around the world.
During the film festival in May thieves stole Chopard jewellery worth $1.4 million from Novotel Suites in a pre-dawn heist.
The jewellery was due to be loaned to movie stars to wear on the red carpet.
