Tory 'posts anti-Irish tweet' over Eurovision Newsdesk Newsdesk

The Twitter account of a Tory councillor in England is no longer accessible after a racist tweet prompted a massive backlash.

The offensive tweet came from Warwick councillor Nick Harrington's account just after midnight on Sunday morning after Ireland awarded the UK zero points during the Eurovision final.

The tweet read, "#Eurovision2017 thanks Ireland. You can keep your f'king gypsies! Hard border coming folks!"

It is not clear whether or not Mr Harrington posted the tweet himself but it generated a backlash and his account appears to be suspended or deleted.

However, a screenshot of the tweet has gone viral.

Some are now calling for his resignation while one Twitter user claimed they had reported him to Surrey Police for hate speech.

However, yesterday morning Surrey Police confirmed they had not received any complaints in relation to the tweet.

The Irish Independent has reached out to Mr Harrington for comment. Councillor Andrew Mobbs, leader of Warwick District Council, said Mr Harrington has been suspended for six months following the "unacceptable" comments.
