People armed with buckets formed a human chain and used a garden hose to put out a blazing sports car after it crashed and burst into flames.

Members of the public rallied round when the Nissan 370Z Nismo left the road and collided with trees in Harrier Lane, Battle, near Hastings, East Sussex.

They sprang into action before firefighters arrived to ensure the fire was fully put out and free the trapped 49-year-old driver who was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.

His front-seat passenger, a 29-year-old man from St Leonards-on-Sea, got out despite suffering serious injuries following Monday afternoon's crash.

He was taken by ambulance to the Conquest Hospital and is thought to be in a stable condition. Sussex Police appealed for witnesses
