Man arrested as seven police officers taken to hospital and Oxford street evacuated after incident

Nicola Harley

A man has been arrested after a reported potential chemical hazard forced 60 people to be evacuated from a block of flats.

Seven police officers were affected by the substance, with two being kept in hospital overnight after they conducted a routine arrest at 5.16am on Thursday.

The property concerned, on Elizabeth Jennings Way, Oxford, was evacuated, but the only people affected were officers and the arrested man, Thames Valley Police said.

The 34-year-old, from Oxford, is in police custody on suspicion of harassment without injury.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "Officers are attending and continue with their search and investigation and it is hoped that residents will be allowed to return during the course of the day."

The police said the incident is not being treated as terror-related and the property is now safe.
