A baby boy is in a critical condition after he was shot with what police believe was an air rifle in Bristol.

The one-year-old was rushed to hospital with a serious head injury after police were called to a property shortly after 4pm yesterday.

A 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman have been arrested. It is understood that they are not related to the child.

Detective Inspector Jonathan Deane said: "Clearly these are very tragic circumstances.

"We have a trained liaison officer with the family of the child and they will be kept updated on the progress of our investigation.

"We're aware this will have an impact on the wider community and would encourage anyone with concerns to contact their local neighbourhood team."

Anyone with information that could help the police investigation is asked to call 101 and quote reference number 521614112.
