Bid to find Irish fiance of missing girl

Margaret Davis

A SENIOR detective has appealed for the Irish fiance of a woman at the centre of Scotland Yard's oldest unsolved missing persons case to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Rock is trying to trace Tom McGinty, who was engaged to 16-year-old Mary Flanagan, pictured, when she went missing in 1959. She left her home in West Ham, east London, to go to a New Year's Eve party and vanished. Mr Rock said: "If Tom is still around, I would ask him to make himself known to me and let me know what happened at the time."

Police believe Irishman Mr McGinty had been in the Merchant Navy, and there are no files from the time to show whether he was interviewed in the wake of Mary's disappearance. Her siblings Brenda, Eileen and Kevin have not given up hope of finding their sister alive, and appeals for information are being renewed ahead of what would be her 70th birthday on June 9.

Anyone with information can call Newham Police Missing Persons Unit on 0208 217 5728 or the charity Missing People on 116 000.
