Angry Etna lights up night sky in red-hot display
Italy's Mount Etna erupted into life yesterday spewing forth lava fountains which brightened the night sky.
The eruption followed a period of intermittent activity and produced a plume of ash which led to the temporary cancellation of some flights at the nearby Catania airport.
This photograph from Reuters shows lava flowing down the slopes of the mountain early yesterday after Europe's biggest and most active volcano erupted.
The ANSA news agency reported that flames were sent hundreds of metres into the air and could be seen from nearby towns.
