‘Accomplice’ of Russian agent Anna Chapman arrested in Holland
AN alleged accomplice of glamorous Russian agent Anna Chapman has been arrested in Holland following an investigation by the German secret service.
The 60-year-old Dutch diplomat, known only as Raymond P. was detained in The Hague on suspicion of passing on 450 files to a couple from the same spy ring that Chapman belonged to before her cover was blown in 2010.
German media reported that the diplomat has refused to make a statement and was not co-operating with investigators.
He had allegedly handed over the files full of sensitive information to the couple, Andreas and Heidrun A., in the German university town of Marburg.
According to the German magazine Focus, the couple, who have also been arrested, were provided with false identities and documents by the same Moscow handlers from the SVR, Russia's external security service, who once worked with Chapman. They both deny charges of espionage and using false documents.
Chapman shot to world attention in 2010 after she was arrested with nine others by US authorities on suspicion of working for an illegal espionage network. Using the surname of her English public-school educated ex-husband, Chapman was alleged to have used her female charms to win trust of selected targets and extract sensitive information.
After being deported back to Russia and being stripped of her British citizenship, Chapmen revelled in the publicity and nickname "Agent 00sex", using her unexpected fame to launch a new career.
She appeared with a pistol and little else in a copy of the Russian edition of the magazine Maxim and has made a number of catwalk appearances as a celebrity model. She has also hosted her own television shows on Russian television.
