Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is almost certain to be banned from the World Cup for the second successive tournament after he bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder during his team's 1-0 win yesterday.

FIFA is investigating the incident which has become a worldwide talking point and the Liverpool star, twice previously banned for biting, looks set to be hit with another long suspension despite escaping punishment during the match. FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce said they should "take whatever action was necessary".

Suarez and Chiellini clashed in the Italian penalty area 10 minutes from the end of the match which sealed Uruguay's progression and Italy's elimination from the tournament.
