Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak has been released.

An Egyptian court has turned down deposed president Hosni Mubarak's request to be released from prison during an investigation into corruption charges, according to the state news agency.

The Cairo Criminal Court ordered Mubarak to remain in jail for 15 days while the charges are probed, news agency MENA reported.

Mubarak can appeal against Sunday's decision.

The long-time autocrat was ousted during a 2011 public uprising.

He has spent more than two years in detention without a final verdict in the case alleging that he is responsible for the deaths of nearly 900 protesters during the uprising.

He also has been ordered held in prison on other charges, including corruption.
