Dick Van Dyke has announced plans to return to the Illinois town where he grew up to lead a fundraising drive aimed at saving his childhood home.

Van Dyke said he will make two fundraising appearances at events in Danville in June.

Money raised will be used for the restoration effort on his house.

The 90-year-old said that he has always been the "same Midwestern nerd" people in the small town knew decades ago.

He said that he grew up thinking Danville was the centre of the universe and added that he still does.

A number of well-known entertainers grew up in Danville, including actor Gene Hackman.
