Student nurses were deployed to the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic to relieve chronic staff shortages in one of the worst-hit nursing homes, new records show.

Minutes of Health Service Executive crisis meetings show that students were drafted into St Mary's Hospital in the Phoenix Park - where 24 residents died of Covid-19 and scores of staff contracted the virus in April and May.
