Carlos the Jackal on hunger strike

CARLOS the Jackal is on a hunger strike to protest against being held in isolation.

Cold War-era criminal mastermind Carlos, who is serving a life sentence in a French prison for the murder of three people in Paris in 1975, goes on trial next month, accused of killing 11 people in four attacks in France in the 1980s.

Tyler breaks teeth in bathroom fall

AN Aerosmith concert in Paraguay was postponed after the band's lead singer Steven Tyler fell in his hotel bathroom, hitting his face and breaking two teeth.

A spokesman said the 63-year-old singer was treated at a hospital near Asuncion for cuts and received two dental implants for the lost teeth.

Lindsay Lohan's father in court

THE estranged father of actress Lindsay Lohan made his first appearance in court yesterday on domestic violence charges.

Judge Walter Heinrich set bail at $5,000 (€3,600) for Michael Lohan, who is accused of grabbing his on-and-off girlfriend Kate Major and pushing her down multiple times during an argument at her home in Tampa, Florida. The judge told Lohan to stay away from the 28-year-old.

Girl group to light up London

POP band The Saturdays have been chosen to turn on the London Christmas lights in Oxford Street.

The girl group, which features Thurles singer Una Healy, will flick the switch on the mile-long lights next Tuesday.

Girl (5) backs car out of driveway

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD looking for her mother in Ohio backed a car out of the driveway, then called police for help.

Mansfield police say Ameleah Kegley got into the car after returning from school to an empty house after her mother had gone to hospital with an emergency. She called the police, explained the situation and asked for help getting the car back home.

Man rescued after making trunk call

POLICE in California rescued a man stuck inside a hollow tree trunk by following the sounds of his screams down into a river bed.

They found the man stuck up to his chest inside a narrow hole in the trunk, which extended about 4ft or 5ft underground. It is not known why he climbed into the hole near the base of the tree.
