US vice-president Joe Biden has warned that Russia is the greatest threat to the "liberal" world order.

Mr Biden issued a "call to action" to Europe and the United States to defend the order during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

He decried a growing impulse in the West towards isolation and to "build walls", which was seen as a veiled criticism of plans from President-elect Donald Trump.

In his final major speech in his post, Mr Biden said he would "not mince words" as he accused Moscow of seeking to "whittle away at the edges of the European project" that has brought decades of peace.

Mr Biden acknowledged to hundreds of people at the World Economic Forum that he will hold his post for only another 48 hours, and quipped: "Then I can start to say what I think."
