Bus driver arrested as 12 tourists killed in accident in Mexico

Eight Americans, two Swedes and one Canadian were among 12 people killed in a bus crash in eastern Mexico, authorities said.

A Mexican tour guide also died after the accident involving a bus carrying tourists to Mayan ruins on a narrow road in Quintana Roo state.

The Quintana Roo state government said the injured also includes three Canadians, four Brazilians and four Americans. Two other Swedes were wounded and transported to the United States for treatment.

The bus driver, who was injured, has been taken into custody.

Seven others who were slightly injured in the crash had returned to their cruise ship after the accident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. A passenger on another bus which passed just minutes after the crash said he observed skid marks on the dry pavement.

US state department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said: "We express our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragedy."
