Blaze kills firefighter

Two 15-year-old girls have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after a firefighter was killed tackling a blaze in Manchester.

Stephen Hunt (38) was part of a team called to a fire at Paul's Hair World in the city centre on Saturday when he and a colleague got into difficulties. Greater Manchester Fire Service said Mr Hunt, a father of two teenagers, was killed by a "ferocious and sudden build-up of heat".

NEW RULERS FOR BHUTAN

Bhutan, the tiny Himalayan kingdom, has rejected its government amid widespread discontent over high prices and slow development.

The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) swept to power after a landslide victory in Saturday's election. Voters rejected the ruling Druk Phuensum Tshogpa party in favour of the PDP, which campaigned for closer economic ties with neighbouring India.

GEORGE'S JUSTICE HOPE

Barry George, the man who was wrongly jailed and served eight years for TV presenter Jill Dando's murder, has spoken of his hope to see her killer face justice.

Mr George (53) who was refused legal permission to continue his appeal for compensation, said: "I hope it's in my lifetime that the real killer is caught." He added: "A massive cheer went up at Belmarsh Prison when I was cleared but my first thoughts were of her not getting justice and for her family."

DOMINGO IN FULL TUNE

After spending several days in hospital, opera singer Placido Domingo said yesterday that an early diagnosis for a blocked blood vessel saved him from possibly more serious medical complications.

The 72-year-old tenor said he had felt unwell after a rehearsal and sought medical help. The singer said doctors then detected a case of deep vein thrombosis and applied the appropriate treatment.

HALLE BERRY MARRIES

Halle Berry married her fiance, French actor Olivier Martinez, in a weekend ceremony at a village church where princes are buried in France's Burgundy region.

The owner of the Chateau de Vallery, Patrice Vansteenberghe, said the actress – 46 and pregnant – and her 47-year-old husband "were very beautiful and very happy".
