Battle-axe meets thief

A burglar in the US picked the wrong victim when he tried to rob a tomahawk-throwing champion in her home.

Police in the Southern Californian town of Hemet said a woman called emergency services and said she had been awakened by a man trying to remove her watch from her wrist. The woman told police she had quickly grabbed one of her throwing axes and chased the man out of the apartment. Nicholas Ulloa (22) was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

AMAZON BOOK 'BIASED'

The wife of Amazon.com boss Jeff Bezos has sent a review to the online retailer – blasting a book about her husband's company.

MacKenzie Bezos posted a one-star review on the Amazon page for Brad Stone's 'The Everything Store' despite it receiving positive reviews from critics. But Mrs Bezos wrote that the book was filled with inaccuracies and biased against her husband and Amazon.

TOWN OF WOOL FLEECED

Police in south-west England appealed for help yesterday in tracking down thieves who made off with 160 sheep from a field near the village of Wool.

Police say the sheep were stolen between Saturday and Monday.

US IN GAY RIGHTS MOVE

The US Senate has pushed a major gay rights bill past a first, big hurdle in a clear sign of Americans' greater acceptance of homosexuality.

The vote of 61-30 essentially ensured that the Senate has the votes to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that would forbid workplace discrimination against gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

46-YEAR WAIT FOR BIKE

A man in the US is getting his motorcycle back 46 years after it was stolen.

US Customs and Border Protection said the black and blue 1953 Triumph Tiger 100 was recovered last week at the Port of Los Angeles. It was on its way to Japan, with its value listed as $9,000 (€6,678). The bike was reported stolen in 1967.

ELVIS 'PREGNANCY TEST'

Zoos around the US will soon find out whether a beagle named Elvis can let them know when their polar bears are pregnant.

The two-year-old has been trained by a handler who has taught dogs to sniff out everything from explosives to bed bugs. Elvis is investigating faecal samples of 22 female bears from 14 zoos.
