Throat of Afghan teen cut over refusal to wed

A 15-YEAR-OLD Afghan girl had her throat cut after her father refused a marriage proposal from relatives, police have said, in what activists warn is the latest in a series of horrific crimes against women.

The girl, Geesa, was killed by two men from the spurned family as she went to collect water from a stream in her village in northern Afghanistan.

The attack came after her father, Mohammad Rahim, said she was too young to be engaged.

Two men, named as Massoud and Sadeq, have been arrested on suspicion of the murder in Kulkul village. They were relatives of Geesa.

"At this stage it looks like they wanted to marry her and the father refused, so they killed her," said a police spokesman.

The provincial director of women's affairs, Nadira Giah, said the province had been hit by a wave of violence against women. (©Daily Telegraph, London)
