Teen burned to death over sex assault report
A Bangladeshi teenager has been burned to death for reporting sexual harassment against her head teacher.
Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a 19-year-old from a small town 160km south of Dhaka, was killed at her school less than two weeks after she had filed a sexual harassment complaint against her head teacher.
The saga has gripped Bangladesh and shone a light on the danger of reporting sexual harassment in the country.
Ms Rafi said the teacher called her into his office and repeatedly touched her in an inappropriate manner. She was forced to run out before things could have escalated.
A student at an Islamic school, Ms Rafi was filmed by the officer in charge on his phone as she recounted what had happened. This was leaked online.
It is alleged she was later tricked into going to the roof of the school where four or five people surrounded her and pressured her to withdraw her complaint but set her on fire when she refused. (© Independent News Service)
