Prosecutor in Bhutto murder case is killed
The lead prosecutor in the Benazir Bhutto murder case has been shot dead as he travelled to court in the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
Gunmen sprayed Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali's car with bullets in a busy area of the city. A female passer-by also died and Mr Zulfiqar's bodyguard was wounded.
The killing will reignite conspiracy theories about who was behind the assassination of Ms Bhutto, the charismatic former prime minister.
Pervez Musharraf, the country's former military dictator, is under house arrest accused of failing to provide proper security. However, Mr Zulfiqar was involved in a number of high-profile investigations including the 2008 Mumbai attacks carried out by Pakistani-based extremists.
No one has been convicted of the murder of Ms Bhutto.
She was killed by a suicide attacker as she left an election rally in December 2007.
Although the then government claimed radio intercepts showed that the Pakistani Taliban were to blame, many people believe Mrs Bhutto was the victim of a plot hatched by those who feared her returning to power.
The fact that Mr Zulfiqar was killed on his way to the latest hearing in the murder case will only add to speculation of a cover-up. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
