Khan promises he will shoot down US drones
IMRAN Khan has promised to order the Pakistan air force to shoot down US drones if he takes power next year.
The former cricketer will lead peace activists into the country's lawless tribal belt today to publicise the human toll of the CIA's covert missile strikes.
He is a serious contender for power after a decade-and-a-half in the political wilderness since retiring from sport, and is now one of the country's most outspoken critics of America's use of unmanned aircraft. He told the BBC the attacks were pushing young men into the arms of Taliban recruiters.
"The idea that it is only killing al-Qa'ida is a myth. The majority of people killed are innocent civilians or low-level militants," he said.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism says between 474 and 881 civilians have died in drone strikes since 2004. (©Daily Telegraph, London)
