Emu Ponzi scam ruffles feathers
A scheme to breed emus in southern India has been revealed as a large Ponzi scheme in recent days, according to police. The discovery has left 20,000 fuming investors fighting to recover their money and officials struggling to feed up to 100,000 unwanted emus.
"Thousands got scammed," said Bhuvaneshwari Gupta of the animal rights group PETA India. "There's no demand for emu meat or eggs in India. People are unfamiliar and uncomfortable with emu meat."
