DJ sacked for asking Australian PM Julia Gillard if her partner is gay
AN Australian radio presenter has been sacked after questioning prime minister, Julia Gillard on the sexuality of her partner, Tim Mathieson, during a live radio interview.
Station chiefs had originally suspended Perth's 6PR Harold Sattler for repeatedly asking whether her partner was gay. However, they have since confirmed that Sattler has been sacked for his comments.
"Fairfax Radio management has reviewed this interview and considers that the questions posed by Mr Sattler were disrespectful and irrelevant to the political debate," it said.
"The PM answered Mr Sattler's questions with dignity and some patience."
In the interview, Mr Sattler asked: "Tim's gay?" to which Ms Gillard replied that the suggestion was "absurd".
But, undeterred, Mr Sattler pressed her: "You hear it. He must be gay; he's a hairdresser. But you've heard it! It's not me saying it, it's what people say."
Ms Gillard said: "To all the hairdressers out there, including to all the men who are listening, I don't think in life one can actually look at a whole profession full of different human beings and say, we know something about every one of those human beings. I mean, it's absurd, isn't it?"'
