The stepfather of a nine-year-old boy has been arrested for forcing the child to play violent computer game 'Grand Theft Auto' for as much as three hours a day, every day, for three weeks.

Maasa Kawabata (28) was arrested by police in Kyoto, Japan, on suspicion of endangering the welfare of a child, the Yomiuri newspaper reported.

Mr Kawabata, a male nurse, told police that he had not forced the boy to play the game, which carries a warning about violent content and is rated 18.

Mr Kawabata married the boy's mother (31) in October 2012 but reportedly forced him to play the game when she was at work.

Investigators also told local media that Mr Kawabata called the boy "stupid" and "moron" and even told him to "die".

The boy, the oldest of three, complained of headaches, stomach pains and nausea.

A doctor diagnosed a problem with the child's autonomic nervous system, which includes heart rate, blood pressure and malfunctions in the digestive tract, brought on by the stress of the playing the game. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
