Chinese man filmed running over boy repeatedly

Malcolm Moore

A Chinese man has been arrested after repeatedly running over a three-year-old boy in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu.

In an episode that illustrates both the callousness and carelessness of China's new rich, the driver of a BMW X6 sports-utility vehicle knocked over the boy while reversing.

After then running over the child, the driver then put his car into drive and drove over him again. Finally, he stopped his car to see what had happened, but neglected to put his handbrake on and the vehicle slid backwards, running the boy over again.

The driver, whose surname has been released as Wu, then abandoned the scene, but the incident was captured on a surveillance video. "My son was run over four times," the boy's father, who has been named as Mr Li, told the Chinese state media. "The driver killed him intentionally."

More than 230,000 people have voiced their rage about the killing, pointing out that the car is equipped with sensors that sound an alarm when the back is close to an object.

"The driver must be rich or he would never think he could get away with this," said one commenter on Sina, a Chinese internet forum. "At the end of the day, he will probably pay off the police and the boy's family".
