The body of a baby was discovered on an Australian beach by a group of children playing in the sand.

The group of young children had been digging holes on a beach in the Sydney suburb of Maroubra.

A crime scene was established this morning after the discovery was made at the southern end of the beach.

“Police from Eastern Beaches Local Area Command were called to the beach and have established a crime scene which will be examined by specialist forensic officers,” New South Wales police said in a statement.

“Officers from the police rescue squad are also on scene and investigations into the child’s death are continuing, however, the age and sex of the child are yet to be determined.”

The cause of the baby’s death is still unknown.

Police confirmed to ‘9News Sydney’ that a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
