Ageing China feels heat over strict one-child rule

China's population is ageing rapidly, it was revealed yesterday, piling pressure on the government to relax the strict one-child policy.

The results of a national census, conducted late last year, show the percentage of elderly people in the country of 1.34 billion jumped, while that of young people plunged sharply.

The census results, announced yesterday, also show that half the population now lives in cities.

China's ageing population has fuelled worries over how long the country will be able to sustain economic growth.

The census results show that people aged 60 and above comprise 13.3pc of the population, up nearly 3pc from 2000. Young people aged 14 and below accounted for 16.6pc, down 6.3pc from a decade ago.
