A dog who lost almost half of his face after being eaten alive by maggots has made an incredible recovery.

The canine was rescued by Animal Aid Unlimited (AAU), a US-based rescue organisation who help injured and abandoned animals in Rajasthan, India.

"Half of this poor boy's face was actually eaten away by maggots. Even when he closed his mouth you could see his gums and teeth," AAU posted on Facebook.

"And the pain he must have endured.... We found him sitting in a posture of such abject resignation it broke our hearts.

"His only movement was the frantic reflex of his paw desperately trying to scratch away the pain."

They added: "After three months of treatment Teddy Bear is healed but has a permanent deformity on his face. But you try telling him that!"

A video capturing a delighted Teddy Bear playing with his rescuers following his recovery has racked up thousands of views and shares on Facebook.
