More Britons recognise the Japanese national flag than the Union Flag, according to new research.

A survey of 2,000 adults by electronics giant Panasonic also found that one in 12 people thought the Union Flag, also called the Union Jack, Jack was the English flag, while one in 10 said the St George's flag was the national flag of Wales.

Panasonic, one of the official Olympic sponsors, said the study also found that a third of Britons thought the Australian flag belonged to the United States.

The Japanese flag was the most recognisable, followed by the Union Flag and the stars and stripes of the US.

Gaele Lalahy, digital communications manager at Panasonic UK, said: "With the influx of flags set to come into the UK for the Olympic Games I'm sure fans will enjoy the opportunity to learn them all."

Panasonic has launched a "flag tags" app on Facebook and mobiles, allowing users to virtually paint their face with their team's flag.
