A confused American student found herself at the centre of a Twitter storm last night after her fictional namesake, Bobby Beale, murdered his sister in EastEnders.

Californian teenager Bobbie Beale, who had never seen the soap before, started receiving a series of menacing tweets at the climax of the Lucy Beale murder mystery which marked the show's 30th anniversary.

One viewer tweeted the cosmetology student saying "murderer", with another asking "why did you kill Lucy?".

The second tweet proved particularly perplexing for Bobbie, as Lucy was also the name of her pet dog.

She told BBC Radio 5 Live this morning: "I got about three tweets this afternoon saying 'why did I kill Lucy?' and I was pretty confused because I thought it was talking about my dog, because my dog's name is Lucy.

"I got more than 1,500 new followers and my tweet got 15,000 retweets - it was just crazy.

"I definitely didn't kill my sister and I definitely didn't kill my dog."

Bobbie began responding to the first wave of tweets by asking followers: "Why are 3 people from Scotland that I don't know, tweeting me about killing someone named Lucy..."

Initially concerned people were talking about a real murder, she then tweeted: "I'm scared for my life about my last tweet."

But once she saw the BBC tweet about the on-screen killing, she realised what had happened and looked up the show.

Bobbie topped off her day in the spotlight with a selfie, accompanied with the hashtag IdidntKillLucy.
