Police are investigating after thieves stole every item of furniture from a restaurant - apart from one chair

A restaurant owner was left baffled when thieves stole every item of furniture from his premises - apart from one chair.

David Appleby, 34, was stunned when he arrived to open The Thai Cafe and found 13 tables and 25 chairs had vanished.

Police are investigating the "unusual theft", which is believed to have occurred the early hours of January 15.

It is believed the chairs, which were around 13 years old, and tables could have been stolen "to order".

Mr Appleby, who took over the restaurant 10 years ago, said: "I came in on the Wednesday to open up for the evening and saw the back door had been kicked in.

"Then I saw the tables and chairs had gone. The tables had cast iron bases and were hard to manoeuvre and the chairs were quite old.

"They had left me with one chair, I'm not sure if they just didn't see it."

Mr Appleby said he was forced to close the restaurant that evening as customers could not eat sitting on the floor.

He has since reopened, after borrowing tables and chairs from friends in the local Chinese community.

"It was a crazy thing for them to do," he said. "It wasn't worth the cost of being caught.

"I'm hoping that someone will have a change of heart and return the chairs and tables for my birthday on Friday."

He said no wine, beer or spirits were taken in the burglary.

DS Andy Hodges, of Avon and Somerset Police, said the theft was possibly linked to other commercial burglaries in December in the Keynsham and Weston area of Bath.

"This is a most unusual burglary and theft and there's no clear explanation as to why someone would steal tables and chairs, presumably to order," DS Hodges said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101.
