There's a petition calling for new pink UK passports after an MP said the current ones were humiliating

A new £490 million contract that could turn the post-Brexit UK passport dark blue has caused quite a stir.

A petition to create pink UK passports after Brexit has emerged on the internet, seemingly in response to a politician’s comments the current passport causes nationwide “humiliation”.

The petition calls for the colour change on an official UK Government and Parliament site, and reads: “Leaving the EU is all about taking back control and making Britain great again. Let’s set our sights high and, remembering the pink all across the globe just 100 years ago, let’s have our British passports proudly clad in pink!”.

On Sunday, Tory MP Andrew Rosindell said the current passport had been a source of “humiliation”, while discussing the possibility of restoring the dark blue colour of the UK passport following its departure from the European Union.

He told the Press Association:”The humiliation of having a pink European Union passport will now soon be over and the United Kingdom nationals can once again feel pride and self-confidence in their own nationality when travelling, just as the Swiss and Americans can do”.

A side note: The current UK passport is actually burgundy – some may say maroon even – and the choice of word did not go unnoticed by some.

At the same time, others couldn’t understand why so much time, effort and money was being invested in the colour of the passport – including Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The fact is, the UK passport is routinely redesigned every five years and Eurosceptics view the new £490 million contract as a way to ditch the EU burgundy cover in favour of a return to the colour of the past.

Considering the petition only had 15 signatures as of Sunday evening, we doubt Brits will be travelling with pink passorts when the current contract expires in 2019.
