A Santa was forced to leave a Christmas lights switch-on after being set upon by youths.

Father Christmas was sitting in his grotto in Longton, Staffordshire, in the town centre on Friday night when two youths pulled his beard and his glasses fell off, police said.

Santa left the event after the incident.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said: "We are treating the incident as an anti-social behaviour matter and will be talking to Santa and to the youths involved if we are able to trace them."

Richard Cresswell, vice-chairman of the Longton Events Board, a volunteer group which organises the event, said: "It won't put us off holding the event in future. It's regrettable, because there were still plenty of families around.

"I just hope it doesn't put them off coming to Longton."
