Meerkat pups delight on zoo debut
Meerkats might not be the first creatures you'd consider calling shy, but two new pups born at Chester Zoo in August have finally emerged from their burrows to the delight of visitors.
The youngsters born on August 28 have stayed in their underground homes with their parents and other members of their family for their first important weeks, but have now taken their first playful steps outside.
Chester Zoo lead keeper Lucy Edwards said of her new charges: "Meerkats are really sociable animals and it's great to watch our two new pups as they mix with the rest of the mob.
"Much of their time is spent foraging, playing and grooming and it's these types of activities that make the family such a close-knit group."
The pair are the second litter to be born at Chester Zoo this year.
