Jermain Defoe's reaction to his England call-up has us feeling all lovely about football again

By Max McLean

He’s been away from the international scene for four years.

If Jermain Defoe’s journey back to Premier League stardom has all the hallmarks of a Disney flick, his selection for Gareth Southgate’s England squad is surely the warm, fuzzy ending.

Sunderland’s 34-year-old frontman moved to the MLS in 2014, a sign he was winding down, but after an unhappy spell, he came back to the Premier League, joining the Black Cats – and he’s been earning plaudits ever since.

And Defoe’s reaction to his international call-up is what’s got us falling back in love with the beautiful game again.

Lovely stuff – after 14 league goals in a struggling Sunderland side this season, Defoe’s extraordinary efforts have been rewarded.

England were more than happy to have him back, it seems…

… while Defoe demonstrated his grasp of social media dialect with a well-chosen gif – this guy.

Not sufficiently melted yet? Look how happy he is talking about the call from Southgate.

It wasn’t just Defoe who was thrilled by the news, either – the striker’s inclusion was widely celebrated across the Twitter-sphere.

It’s certainly been a while since the former Tottenham man appeared on the international stage – anybody fancy a holiday to the “international wilderness”?

And while it seems remarkable that Defoe, at 34, is still dominating defences, his physical fitness means you might have to get used to the sight of him wearing the shirt.

Welcome back, Jermain.
