An American woman has given birth to her own granddaughter.

Cindy Reutzel, 53, underwent an in-vitro procedure that implanted an embryo made from her daughter Emily Jordan's egg and son-in-law Mike Jordan's sperm.

The situation arose after Mrs Jordan was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2010.

Just before the 29-year-old was to undergo a radical hysterectomy, she was told she was pregnant.

The couple made the excruciating decision to go ahead with the surgery even though it seemed to mean they could never have their own children.

But now, more than two years later, the couple have welcomed a child after Ms Reutzel underwent the in-vitro procedure and last week gave birth to her own granddaughter.
