Graduating student gets degree certificate and marriage proposal
A student has got down on bended knee and proposed to his girlfriend as she was being presented with her degree certificate at her graduation ceremony.
Shiyi Ying, 25, was given special permission to take to the stage at the University of Southampton so he could pop the question to Yu-Yen Ou, his partner of two years.
Mr Ying, from China, invited her onto the stage and told her: "Deep inside I know you are the only one I can share the rest of my life with, because I love you."
He then produced a ring and asked her to marry him, to which Miss Ou, 24, from Taipei, Taiwan, said yes, before the couple hugged, prompting applause and cheers from fellow graduands and staff gathered inside the Nuffield Theatre on the university's Highfield campus.
Southampton's vice-chancellor, Professor Don Nutbeam, said: "I have been involved in graduation ceremonies for 25 years and this is certainly a first for me. I'd like to offer the couple huge congratulations and every best wish for the future."
Both are international students and studied masters degrees at Southampton Business School.
