'Girlfriend in labour' announcement at Wigan game may have been a prank
A Tannoy announcement telling a football fan his girlfriend had gone into labour may have been a prank.
Officials at Wigan Athletic FC said they are now looking into whether the announcement at Saturday's game against Colchester United was a hoax.
It was during the League One match at Wigan's DW Stadium that an announcement was made telling a Daniel Cunliffe that his girlfriend was about to give birth.
The message came shortly after the second half had got under way and as the home side were 4-0 up.
Following the announcement, spectators from the stands began chanting, "time to go".
A spokesman for the League One side said the stadium had received a call during the match asking to get the message to Mr Cunliffe.
But they have since said that they are looking into whether it could have been a joke.
The spokesman said: "It was called up to our stadium announcer, asking can we get the message to him. It said 'Can Daniel Cunliffe please make yourself known, your girlfriend has gone into labour'. The crowd started singing 'cheerio'."
Wigan Athletic tweeted from the ground: "An announcement for one of our fans over the tannoy.. whose girlfriend has just gone into labour! Time to go is the chant from ES2 #wafc"
Wigan ran out 5-0 winners.
