A horse named Winston Churchill appropriately won a race at Uttoxeter on the 50th anniversary of the former prime minister's death.

Trained in Gloucestershire by Sophie Leech, the nine-year-old was sent off a 3-1 chance in a five-runner handicap chase over two and a half miles.

Jockey Killian Moore made all of the running aboard Winston Churchill and stayed on strongly to account for Harry's Farewell by a yawning 81 lengths.

Leech admitted it was no coincidence that Winston Churchill was running on the same day as the great statesman's death.

The Westbury-on-Severn handler said: "His owner, Geoff Thompson, is a massive Sir Winston Churchill fan and has loads of memorabilia.

"He wanted to try to get the horse to win on this day, so it's a race we pinpointed for quite some time.

"There were a couple of other options for him this week, but everything panned out to perfection.

"It was a great result and we are very pleased."
