A dog has thwarted a petrol station robbery in the US by biting the suspect twice on the face.

The man attempted to rob an member of staff at a Portland Road gas station in Saco, Maine, yesterday afternoon, police said.

The employee refused to hand over money and was holding onto his dog when the animal lunged at the robber.

Saco Deputy Chief Jeffrey Holland said the man fled in a pick-up truck and is still at large.

He described the dog as a "good-sized" pit bull-boxer mix and said the worker normally brings the dog to work with him.
