Tara Palmer-Tomkinson claimed her dog nibbled her royal wedding invite

It is an excuse that only an "It girl" like Tara Palmer-Tomkinson could make - "the dog chewed my royal wedding invitation".

The socialite's family pet took a chunk out of the gold-trimmed card when it arrived at her parents' home in February.

Interviewed in the latest edition of Hello! magazine, she said: "My invitation was sent to my parents' home in the country.

"Unfortunately, our family dog has a thing about the post and of all the letters he could have got his teeth into, he went for the royal one, so it's got a corner missing."

Famed for her hard partying and exhibitionist streak, Miss Palmer-Tomkinson, 39, and her family are close friends of the Royal Family. Her father Charles is a former British Olympic skier who instructed the Prince of Wales.

In 1988 her mother Patti was skiing in the Swiss Alps with the prince when their party was hit by an avalanche which killed the Queen's former equerry, Major Hugh Lindsay, and left Mrs Palmer-Tomkinson with serious leg injuries.

Miss Palmer-Tomkinson, who was brought up on her parents' 1,200-acre Dummer Grange estate near Basingstoke, Hants, said she will not be bringing her new and unnamed boyfriend to Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding on April 29.

And she quashed rumours that she is having a nose operation because she wants a perfect profile for the big day.

She won her battle against drugs more than 10 years ago and said it needed to be rebuilt with new cartilage after she suffered an accident which damaged previous reconstructive surgery.

Miss Palmer-Tomkinson added: "But I want to put the record straight and say that I am not getting it fixed for the royal wedding, as has been reported."
