A museum visitor in the US has demonstrated why "don't touch" signs are often in place to protect exhibits.

Staff at America's National Watch and Clock Museum have released CCTV footage of the moment the man accidentally knocking a valuable timepiece off a wall, leaving it smashed.

The piece was created by James Borden and donated to the museum in 1994. In the footage the man can be seen trying to catch the clock and hang it back on the wall, despite pieces of it breaking off and rolling on the floor.

The museum said it would not press charges.
