Can you believe Valtteri Bottas finished a thousandth of a second off Sebastian Vettel in qualifying?

By Max McLean

That’s about as close as it gets.

Formula One is of course all about fine margins, but this is ridiculous.

In the final Chinese Grand Prix qualifying session, Valtteri Bottas managed to secure third on the grid with his best lap time – not bad, but has second place ever been so near and yet so far?

Yes, in terms of distance on the track, the Finnish driver was just 5.9 centimetres away from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who earned his place at the front of the grid.

Here’s Bottas attempting to explain that to Seb.

Some fans enjoyed the drama…

…while others made humorous suggestions.

Here’s a handy explanation for you.

Lewis Hamilton finished in pole position, his sixth at the Chinese Grand Prix, and his team mate seemed up for the challenge.

But then, so did the man who finished in between the Mercedes cars.

By what fine margins will Sunday’s race be decided?
