Britons held over 'kidnap prank'
Two British women were arrested in Portugal after they took part in a fake kidnapping as part of a stunt to celebrate a 40th birthday.
Police were called to Restauradores Square in Lisbon after receiving several calls from alarmed onlookers who thought they were witnessing a real abduction.
The women - who have not been named - were bundled into a white van by two men, one of whom was hooded, before it sped off on Sunday afternoon.
Police rushed to the scene and gave chase before catching up with the vehicle and arresting the two British women along with three men and another woman.
The pair were among a party of nine women aged from 27 to 40 who were on a trip to celebrate a 40th birthday when they took part in the hoax, which was understood to be organised by a local entertainment company.
The incident was filmed by one of those taking part, with the camera being seized by investigators along with the vehicle.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the detention of two British nationals in Portugal on September 1. We are providing consular assistance."
