A Burnley defender renowned as "Britain's brainiest footballer" is to appear on Channel Four's long-running game show Countdown.
Clarke Carlisle won the title of brainiest footballer in a 2002 television show - and has been a self-confessed Countdown "addict" since childhood.
He earned 10 A-grade GCSEs and was urged by his headmistress to study mathematics at Oxbridge.
He had an unsuccessful audition on the show during a long-term injury lay-off from January 2001 to September 2002.
He told The Independent last year: "I was thinking 'there is a big word here' rather than building up logically.
"I looked for the big one and failed miserably."
He was more successful this time around and will now face the studio lights - and a friendly face in presenter Jeff Stelling, who presents Sky Sports' Soccer Special.
Carlisle has said: "I know it's a bit geeky but it's fulfilled a lifelong ambition for me."
