In a film depicting his life Ed Miliband should be played by Rowan Atkinson in character as Mr Bean, according to focus groups canvassed by Lord Ashcroft.

Voters were asked which actors would play the main party leaders in the movie of their life and there was "wide" and "unprompted" agreement that the Labour leader would be accurately portrayed by the comic actor playing his bumbling creation.

The Tory former treasurer's unscientific survey named British romcom favourites Hugh Grant and Colin Firth as actors who should be cast to play David Cameron, although the pair have played the prime minister and king respectively.

Meanwhile, all-American stars Tom Cruise and Kevin Bacon, who both rose to prominence in the eighties, were suggested for Nick Clegg.

There was division over Nigel Farage's image, with some suggesting cockney hard man Ray Winstone while others nominating Carry On star Sid James.

Ahead of the Oscars, Lord Ashcroft asked focus groups in Mr Clegg's Sheffield Hallam constituency and Education Secretary Nicky Morgan's Loughborough seat who should play the party leaders in films about their lives.
