Woman who left newborn in paper bag wants her baby back

Clare Cullen

A Brazilian woman arrested after she left her newborn baby in a bag on the street is attempting to get her baby back.

Local media reports that Sandra Queiroz (37) said that she is "very sorry" for what happened and that her actions were "out of desperation".

"The pain I’m feeling right now is much higher than the birth".

Queiroz  was arrested after CCTV footage showed her leaving the baby, wrapped in blankets, in a paper bag on the street in an affluent neighbourhood of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The baby was found by a passing caretaker. A press release from the military police released photographs of the man hailed a "hero" for rescuing the infant.

Queiroz had given birth to the child last Sunday in the "dorm room" of the house where she works as a maid. It has been reported that she abandoned the baby out of fear her employer would dismiss her for having a third child. Her employer released a statement saying he will not dismiss her and that his son, a lawyer, will even defend her in court in relation to the incident.
