IT is one of the more unusual ways to detain a suspect – after a police officer decided to run over a man with his car in a bid to stop him fleeing.

Footage from the car’s dashcam has made its way online this week, despite happening in mid-February.

The Marana police department, based in Arizona, claimed suspect Mario Valencia had fired a gun into the air and was a danger to himself and others.

It went so far as to claim the officer’s actions actually saved Valencia’s life, as he had been threatening suicide.

The video shows teh car being driven by officer Michael Rapiejko mount the pavement, hitting Valencia and smashing into a cement wall.

Officers are then seen leaving their cars with the guns drawn and approaching the man.

It is alleged Valencia had stolen a weapon and was involved with three incidents prior to his arrest.

He was treated in prison for two days before being transferred to prison.
