Video: Horror scenes as workers hang from windows in office fire
FIREFIGHTERS rescued over a dozen people who hung from windows, begging for help during a lunchtime fire in Ecuador that left two of their co-workers dead.
The fire started in this office building in the coastal city of Guayaquil, Ecuador while most of the 300 workers were at lunch.
Trapped employees broke windows to get air and flag down help.
As firefighters scrambled to rescue the office workers, they aimed water hoses through the windows to cool them off.
According to local officials, a 40-year-old woman died when she fell or jumped out of the window.
"One person jumped from the fourth floor, apparently from the scare, before we (the firefighters) arrived ... And the other person died from asphyxiation on the fourth floor which is where the police are working to recover the cadaver," said Guayaquil Fire Chief Martin Cucalon.
At least 96 people were treated by emergency medical workers on the scene. The cause of the blaze has not yet been officially determined.
