Vegetative patient gives birth in care
The chief executive of a private health care facility in Phoenix has resigned following reports a patient gave birth despite being in a vegetative state for more than a decade.
Bill Timmons quit Hacienda HealthCare after the woman reportedly gave birth on December 29. Staff were unaware she was pregnant.
The birth triggered a police investigation and reviews by Arizona state agencies. Governor Doug Ducey's office called the situation "deeply troubling".
A Hacienda board member said they would require a full account of this "absolutely horrifying situation".
